As the popularity of American whiskey has boomed over the past decade, so too has consumer interest in learning more about rye, bourbon and American whiskey. As a result, many spirit writers have focused specifically on the topic.
One such writer is Noah Rothbaum, the founding Editor-in-Chief of Liquor.com, a digital publication dedicated to good drinking and great living. Today, Rothbaum is the editor of The Daily Beast's food and drink section, Half Full, and serves as its Chief Cocktail Correspondent. He is also the author of two books, one on the business of spirits, and another dedicated to the art of American whiskey.
With his years spent collecting insight on the topic of spirits, Rothbaum sought another outlet that could bring his insight beyond the page. In 2017, he launched the “Life Behind Bars” podcast with fellow spirits expert David Wondrich.
Armed with a deep understanding of and appreciation for the origins and evolution whiskey in our country, Rothbaum headed down to Tennessee in early 2019 for his first pilgrimage to America’s oldest registered distillery. While there, he sat down with host Lucas Hendrickson to share his first impressions of the hollow and his appreciation for Jack Daniel’s ongoing role in the pantheon of American spirits. He also shared his own personal journey into the world of spirits writing, and where he sees cocktail culture heading.
